Weston Farm (2 - 5 people, 4 stables)
Weston Farm is a spacious, comfortable and quirky 18th-century farmhouse offering self-catering holiday accommodation in a separate wing of the house with its own private entrance. We also welcome horses to stay in our dedicated guest stable block. Weston Farm is an organic working farm set in 900 acres of unspoiled hill, moor and pasture at the foot of the Pentland Hills. It is less than an hour from both Edinburgh and Glasgow and with super comfy beds, free WiFi, a fully equipped kitchen, big starry skies and welcoming hosts, Weston Farm is the perfect retreat from everyday life.
Spacious rooms, stunning views and modern facilities combined with original art and antiques make Weston the ideal retreat from everyday stresses and a great base from which to explore south and central Scotland by car, on foot or on horseback. As well as our organic farm and livestock management, we participate in a number of environmentally sustainable land management programmes designed to encourage plant and bird diversity.
The farmhouse was built originally as a traditional, one room deep Scottish longhouse, around 100 feet in length. An upper storey was added to one half of the house in 1769. The house has recently been divided to create exceptionally comfortable and spacious guest accommodation, sleeping up to five.
A private entrance porch with cloakroom off leads the kitchen on the ground floor. With a dining room/study/hall and stone staircase to the two bedrooms and bathroom upstairs. The sitting room is at the end of the house next to the dining room where there is a front porch giving access to the garden.
Every room, even the bathroom, has wonderful views over the garden and the valley to the hills beyond. One bedroom has a kingsize bed, the other has twin beds that can be made up as super king on request. The beds have wonderfully comfortable pocket sprung mattresses, feather and down duvets (synthetic available on request), pure cotton or linen bedding, choice of pillows and electric blankets. Rooms have hairdryers. An extra bed can be provided in the twin room on request.
The bathroom has a full-size bath with overhead thermostatic ‘watering can’ shower and there is always plenty of hot water. The sitting room with tapestry sofas, wood burning stove, TV with streaming channels (Netflix, NowTV, Amazon) and DVDs is a great place to relax.
The dining room/study/hall with lots of books to browse and quality hi-fi with a wide selection of CDs provides an extra space to sit and read, play music or eat. A spacious kitchen is fully equipped with oven and hob, dishwasher, washing machine, fridge freezer, toaster, coffee maker and a good range of pots, dishes, china and glassware.
There is free unlimited WiFi throughout the house though it may be slower than some guests are used to. Streaming films is normally possible.
We will always meet you in person when you arrive to give you the key, show your round and help with general information. We live in the other end of the house with our own separate entrance. We are around the farm most of the time – this is a working farm and we need to be around for the animals – but leave guests entirely to their own devices unless help or information is needed.
Weston Farm has two working collies, a leisurely lurcher and an elderly cat living with us so unfortunately, we cannot take guest dogs.
Outside and around the farm
Guests also have full use of the large, well-stocked garden planted mostly with flowering perennials, specimen trees and a herb garden and supplied with garden benches and seating. There is also a barbecue.
You are free to walk or ride around whole farm (subject to checking with us first which parts to avoid or take care on due to stock).
There is a wonderful walk along the disused railway line and through fields to the Neolithic Henge (am listed SSI) at the far end of the farm and another around the specially protected wetland habitat. There are also stunning walking and riding routes along old drove roads into the Pentland Hills and access to forestry tracks an hour’s ride away.
We have five horses of our own. We can accommodate up to four horses in a separate stable block. Each stable has its own attached outdoor pen. Each stable has lights and automatic water troughs and there is a tack storage room, wash facilities and outside WC. We can also offer grazing and use of our 60 x 24 sand and fibre arena.
We can supply a map for riding around the whole 900 acres of the farm. There are several circular routes, extending to about five miles depending. There are tracks, fields, woodland and moor and the ride can be further extended by a couple of miles of roadwork on our quiet, un-numbered road. All abilities are catered for and there are plenty of opportunities for fast riding if wanted. Horses £25/ night
